When the book club began, we envisioned it as a space where both teachers and families could meet in a relaxed environment to chat and exchange ideas. This way, the school learns more about the families: what they need, their concerns, and worries. We like to think that we are rowing together—family and school—in the education of our students. For this reason, knowing what families want and need is crucial for us.
This second edition has exceeded expectations. Fahrenheit 451 raises many questions. Through the protagonist, Montag, and his evolution as a character, we explored themes such as media control, societal censorship, conformity versus individuality, and the dilemma between distraction and happiness. Among quotes from the book and personal experiences, we shared reflections and new questions arose: What drives us in life? What is the meaning of happiness? Are we dependent on social media? What are the consequences of technology in our daily lives, and how does it affect us?
It was a much-celebrated reading by all, as we found many parallels between the book and current times, allowing us to engage in positive self-criticism in this regard.
The afternoon we spent together over coffee, delicious pastries, and books was a success. Furthermore, the number of participants has grown significantly. We are delighted to see the Siroco community expanding.
