An activity to learn to express emotions and feelings through theater

Within the Inquiry Unit "How do we express ourselves?" the 2nd-grade students of Primary created a small play: from writing the script to performing it in front of their classmates

The value of teaching in the early years of students, and throughout their school life, also lies in knowing who we are, what the world is like, and what surrounds us. Therefore, the Inquiry Units of the Primary Years Programme are structured around questions that students ask themselves. The teacher assists them in the process but does not provide a closed answer, as it is important to encourage a questioning attitude from the early years of primary school.

"How do we express ourselves?" is a question that goes beyond language, because represent what is both inside us and outside in the world. Thus, through oral, written, visual, and bodily expressions, students learn about the past, their present, and self-awareness. And they will be better prepared to understand the world of the future.

Through an activity related to theatrical representation, the 2nd-grade class covered different knowledge axes: writing and musical rhythm for scriptwriting; reading, diction, and body movement for performance; creativity and organization in staging. And not only that: in groups, students asked themselves questions about who they are and how others are.

Sometimes we underestimate the value of the questions children ask us, but how important is for them to look at the world with astonishment and curiosity!
